1. The first time you set your eyes on Julia, what was the first thought to cross your mind?
He presses his lips together thoughtfully and his eyebrows rise. “I ended up flat on my back in this warehouse where she was. When I woke up, she was leaning over me.” He smiles a little, one half of his mouth turning up. “She had—” he waves one hand beside his head— “all this hair. I think it was falling on my chest. And she had these brown eyes. Big brown eyes.” For half an instant, his face twists, like he knows he’s revealing more than he usually does and doesn’t necessarily like it. Whatever thought he’s having, he pushes past, because his face lightens again. “I thought she was beautiful,” he says, “but I didn’t want her around. Not for a while.”
2. If you could take Julia on a normal date, without the threat of being attacked by anything, what would you do and where would you go?
He leans forward a little, propping both hands on his knees, and looks curious—like he’s never really thought about this. He sits that way for what seems like a minute before leaning back in the chair and nodding. “Maybe the beach. Brazil has great beaches. I think I would take her to one of the isolated ones. Julia loves the beach.”
3. What is your happiest memory?
This time, Cayne’s face definitely darkens. The look lasts to long I think I have asked the wrong question. But it slowly lightens up and he grins – a huge, very handsome grin. To my shock, he actually laughs. “She showed me a…pillow fight. We had a pillow fight,” he amends. “Doing that with Julia… It was fun.”
4. We know you've been quite busy lately, but what do you like to do when you have spare time?
He shrugs; he seems to have loosened up. “I don’t really know. I haven’t had what you call ‘spare’ time in.... I have never had any time to spare. But if I did…” He shrugs again. “I like The Economist magazine. I like to read about stocks. And I like to be with Julia.”
5. Before Julia came along, what was your average day like?
This time he shakes his head. His lips are pursed again. After a second, he says, “It was not worth recounting. Honestly. But it required flying long-distances.”
6. How do you see your future?
“I don’t know,” he says honestly. “With Julia, if she wants it that way.” He glances out the window, where snow is falling, obscuring our view of the mountains. He smiles. “Somewhere warmer.”
7. Tell us a secret about yourself no one else knows?
He sits up a little straighter, looking almost…chipper? A silly grin completes the look. “I play a mean harmonica.”
8. You know I have to ask, boxers or briefs?
He smirks. “Boxer-briefs.”
