Jared's in New York checking out a security risk for his best friend, the king. He plans to return to New Orleans quickly, but not if it means losing his chance with the brunette who pretends she wants nothing to do with him.

In over her head with a bunch of winged creatures who most definitely are not angels, Casey has to figure out who to trust with her life and maybe her heart.

Soar is the first book in the Empire Chronicles by Alyssa Rose Ivy. This new series takes place in the same world as the Crescent Chronicles. While the focus is no longer on Allie and Levi, you still get to see them and many of the other characters we know and love. We are introduced to new characters as well. Casey is the main female lead character. She's independent and strong. I think I'm going to like her just as much as Allie. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders. The primary focus is on Casey, (who is new to this world), Toby, and Jared. We are given the point of view of all three of them. Jared has been a favorite of mine for a while now, so I was looking forward to seeing the world from his perspective. I love his personality and sense of humor. He's a lot of fun. As much as I wanted to see Jared finally find a girl, I think I like Casey and Toby together better which came as a complete shock to me because while reading The Crescent Chronicles, I spent a good majority of time not liking Toby for one reason or another. I like how Toby and Casey act together. Toby is very conscientious of Casey too. I really like that about him. Toby is quiet, serious, and is working on getting over Allie, but he is a fighter. He fights for what he wants and those he loves. I'm still Team Jared all the way, but when it comes to Casey, I'm Team Toby.

There is something going on among the other shifters. A rebellion maybe. There was a twist or two thrown in too. While this is a stand alone series, I'm glad I read the Crescent Chronicles before hand. I like knowing the history and back story of many of the characters. I'm so glad we didn't have to permanently say good bye to this world with the ending of the Crescent Chronicles. I could live in this world. This is a wonderful start to a new series! I'm anxious for more!!

One of my favorite parts of starting a new book is setting up the playlist. I generally can’t write more than the initial 10,000 words until I have a solid list of music to work with. The Soar list has a different feel from a lot of my others lists, although it does still have the Crescent vibe.

A few of my most frequently played songs:

Midnight City by M83- I used this song a lot when I was first planning out the book, and I came back to it frequently when I needed some inspiration.  There’s something about the feel of it that puts me in the Pterons in NYC mind frame.

King City –II Figures Remix by Swim Deep. Heather Lyons  (author of the Fate series), introduced me to this band and I couldn’t get enough. I used this song a lot when I was writing Toby.

Paris (Aeroplane Remix) by Friendly Fires- This song really helped me get me into the urban feel of Soar. It was always the perfect pick me up when I needed a second wind.

Get Lucky- Daft Punk- I’ve been a Daft Punk fan since I first discovered them on MuchMusic back in middle school. I guess some things never change. I usually have a few really current songs on my list. The great part of that is every time the songs come on the radio I get excited about my book again.
