Of Blood and Crowns is the first book in the Broken Bonds series by Raven More. There was a lot going on in this book. Valencia has had an extremely rough life and survived abuse at the hands of her Mother, the Queen, or whoever she decides to let take over the punishments. There is a lot to her character, and she gets better as the story progresses. The characters as whole are complex and undergo a significant amount of growth. It loosely has a Star Wars feel for me, except there doesn’t seem to be any space travel, but there are weird sand critters, odd vehicle things, and all sorts of unsavory folks. I’m a little confused as to what the differences are between the types of people. Aside from the folks who are human with no magic, they don’t seem that different to me. Maybe that’s the point.

Although, Raven has enjoyed a successful career as a hybrid author—USA Today bestseller in multiple genres—a great love of all things “not of this world” is Raven’s true passion. The one mission of this new secret identity is to create an escape for all those who need one.
